News of Alumni: John Thompson III '84

Gonzaga Board member and alumnus John Thompson III '84 is joining the front office at Monumental Basketball, a newly-formed collective that includes the Washington Wizards, Washington Mystics, Capital City Go-Go, and Wizards District Gaming.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment owner Ted Leonsis announced the new position at a press conference on Monday, July 22. Thompson, the former Georgetown men’s basketball coach, will oversee athlete development and engagement, including providing development and growth opportunities in education, financial services, and post-career planning.

In an article in the Washington Post, Leonsis explained why Thompson is a good fit for this new position: “We said we want to create this unique set of services that are about whole person, whole people development. Well, John Thompson would be awesome at that, right?” Leonsis said. “He comes from Georgetown. I’m a Georgetown grad. All they talk about it is head, heart, soul, mind and full-person development.”
