Gonzaga Model UN Team Wins Six Awards

Congratulations to Gonzaga's Model United Nations team, which recently competed at DELMUN, a Model UN conference at Salesianum High School in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Gonzaga Model UN Club is comprised of 53 members, 21 of whom traveled to Delaware. The group competed against 400 other students in committees simulating everything from the UN Security Council to President Bush's Cabinet during 9/11. They also debated issues ranging from climate change to nuclear proliferation, representing a wide range of countries—from Russia to Honduras.

In the end, Gonzaga brought home six awards—winners include Will Rice ’22, Jack Garland ’20, Tyler Kaczmarek ’22, Stefan Lazaroae ’19, Timmy Shaheen ’21, and Josh Maggiano ’21.

“Most of these awards were won by underclassmen, and two by freshmen,” says Classics and Social Studies teacher Carl Cardozo, who also serves as a moderator of the club. “For all of the cynicism about the state of political discourse and world affairs we see in our society, I think these guys demonstrate that the future is in good hands.”

Next up for the team is the North American Invitational Model UN (NAIMUN) in February here in Washington, DC.

Congratulations to the team and good luck in February!
