Additionally, on Friday, October 26, the team travelled to George Washington Hospital to partake in a conference on Sickle Cell Disease. Senior captain Dean Engram lost his sister to the disease in August. Dr. Jehan El-Bayoumi, Executive Director of Rodham Institute at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, hosted the event and acted as the panel facilitator. Dean and his mother, Deanna Engram, participated in the panel.

After the event, Dr. El-Bayoumi wrote a letter to the Gonzaga coaching staff, which said in part:

The conference which was attended by medical students, residents and faculty in Internal Medicine entitled “Sickle Cell: A Personal Story” was a moving and meaningful experience for all who attended.  I spoke to several people afterwards and they so appreciated the courage, grace and generosity of Dean and his mother Mrs. Engram. They are truly inspirational. Bobbi, may she rest in peace, was an incredible force of nature. I’m sad that I and the world didn’t have a chance to know her.

...making a difference in health equity begins with humanizing the people we serve and not simply looking at a human being as a disease.  Words matter, relationships matter, actions matter. In the field of sickle cell disease and other chronic illnesses which impact African Americans disproportionately, our health care system should and must do better in giving the excellent care that everyone deserves.
