Football Gets Win Over Peddie (NJ)

The varsity football Eagles entered their game versus The Peddie School Falcons from New Jersey knowing the visiting team was extremely talented and would want to avenge their lone defeat in 2017. Gonzaga came out strong, marching 68 yards in 15 plays to take the early lead behind great blocking from junior Olu Fashanu and a four-yard touchdown run by Lucas Warfield '19.  The defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession which led to a blocked punt by the Eagles special teams, and on the very next play Aaron Turner '20 scampered in from 25 yards out to extend the lead to 14-0 midway through the first quarter.

Peddie's next drive went for 15 plays, but would not yield any points. With the offense back on the field, Caleb Williams '21 wasted no time as he completed passes of 44, 14, and finally 19 yards to find Turner in the back corner of the endzone to make it 20-0. The Falcons used a 54 yard pass and catch to get them quickly into scoring position on the next possession. The visitors got on the board on a eight-yard touchdown run, making the halftime score 20-7.

Coming out of halftime, Gonzaga's Joseph Weté '19 intercepted a screen pass on the third play. The turnover led to another quick strike from Williams. This time Sam Sweeney '19 was on the receiving end, scoring from 41 yards out to make it 27-7 early in the third quarter. Peddie scored on their next drive after converting on a fake punt to make the score 27-14. After a Gonzaga offensive drive stalled, the Eagles pinned the Falcons back to the one-yard line on a great play by Sean Johns '19 to keep the Eagle punt from going into the endzone. The defense would hold, and Marco Kemp '19 would connect on a 28-yard field goal on the ensuing offensive possession to make it 30-14 late in the third quarter. Gonzaga gave up one more score midway through the fourth quarter, but went on to win 30-20 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
