Soccer Wins Three, Ready to Host Jesuit Soccer Classic

On Friday, September 14, Varsity Soccer earned its second WCAC win of the year with a 2-0 victory over a stubborn Bishop Ireton team on Buchanan Field. The Eagles failed to convert on a penalty kick awarded in the first half but got another opportunity in the second half when senior captain Pierre De La Croix-Vabois scored the go-ahead penalty. Ireton would later concede an own-goal after a pressure-filled second half by the Eagles. Here are somed great photos of the action:

On Tuesday, September 18, the Eagles defeated Bishop O'Connell 3-0 at Long Bridge Park. Junior Ryan Elie started the scoring early after an assist from senior Sebastien Tabash. The Eagles did not score again until late in the second half with goals coming from sophomore Will Thompson and junior Brady Young. Senior Gonzalo Bartoli-Piniero recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

The next day, in the last game before this weekend's Jesuit Soccer Classic, the team beat Jesuit rival Geogretown Prep 2-1 on the road.  Junior Brady Young tallied two assists that led to goals by Elie and Luke Egge '19. Gonzalo Bartoli-Piniero also had another strong showing in goal. The Eagles are now 3-0 in the WCAC, and 6-1 overall.

Gonzaga has the honor of hosting the 21st Jesuit Soccer Classic on Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22. The Classic started initially as a match between Rockhurst in Kansas City and Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, and over the years expanded to include Gonzaga and Regis Jesuit from Aurora, CO.

The Classic gives all student-athletes, coaches, and families an opportunity to come together, play some great soccer, participate in Mass, and meet students from other Jesuit school communities from across the country. "We get to know these families and communities very well, given that all of the players from the visiting Jesuit schools stay with families each year," says Assistant Coach Adrian Oryshkevych. "This year, we as a program will be hosting 75 student-athletes from the three schools."

We hope you will come out to Eye Street to support  this wonderful event. Here is the complete schedule of games:
