Football Defeats Prep, Keeps Coupe-Kozik Cup

The varsity football Eagles earned their seventh straight Jesuit Gridiron Classic victory over Georgetown Prep on Saturday, September 15. The teams gathered at Georgetown University on Friday evening to celebrate Mass and share dinner together. Rev. Stephen W. Planning, S.J. was the concelebrant along with Georgetown Prep President, Rev. James R. Van Dyke, S.J. The next day, a great crowd turned out to support the teams in the annual match-up, which raises money for the Washington Jesuit Academy.

The game was part of the Great American Rivalry Series, which highlights top high school football rivalries across the nation. Before kickoff, senior captain Loic Sangwa and longtime assistant coach Conrad Singh '00 were honored. Loic earned the Student Athlete Award, which is given to the  player on each team with the highest GPA; along with the award, he will receive scholarship money for college. Coach Singh joined fellow alums Marcus Washington '98, Brian Gallagher '98, and Mike Williams '83 as the newest inductee into the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame. The awards were presented by members of the United States Marine Corps and both Loic's and Coach Singh's families participated in the ceremony at midfield.

After trading punts to open the game, the Eagles got on the board midway through the first quarter with a touchdown pass from Caleb Williams '21 to John Marshall '19. Lucas Warfield '19 scored in the second quarter to give Gonzaga a 14-0 edge at halftime. The Eagle dominated the third quarter in all three phases of the game. After a sack by Joseph Weté '19, the Eagles special teams forced a bad Prep snap on the punt attempt which resulted in a safety. Williams found Marshall for another touchdown to increase the lead to 23-0. On the ensuing drive, Weté recovered a Little Hoya fumble and returned it to the one yard line. Justin Ball '19 caught a touchdown pass on the next play to seal the 30-0 win. Here are some highlights:
