Thirty-Nine Eagles Earn All-Met Honors, Bacas Named Coach of the Year

Congratulations to the 39 student-athletes who were named to Washington Post All-Met teams for their outstanding play this spring. Also, congratulations to Varsity Crew Head Coach Andy Bacas for being named Coach of the Year. Here is the complete list of honorees:

Crew

• The Washington Post wrote: “He took over the varsity team last summer after the departure of longtime coach Marc Mandel. Bacas helped the team meet the high expectations that surround the storied program, capturing three medals at Stotesbury (including one gold), a national championship win with the second eight and a Mid-Atlantic regional championship with the lightweight eight. This is his second time receiving All-Met Coach of the Year honors. He also won it as the boys’ coach at Yorktown in 2009.”

First Team: John Jaicks '18

• The Washington Post wrote: “The Cornell signee was the coxswain of Gonzaga’s junior eight last year before joining the senior eight this year.”

First Team: John Roberts '18

• The Washington Post wrote: “Stroke man on the varsity eight this year, he is a three-time Stotesbury medalist and a veteran of the Henley Royal Regatta.”

Third Team: Jack Howland, Winston Leslie '18

Best Boats: First Eight, Second Eight, Light Eight, Light Four

• The Washington Post wrote: “The senior leader with a beautiful lefty swing was a mentor to younger teammates on and off the course.”

• The Washington Post wrote: “The four-year varsity golfer was a consistent ball-striker and earned medalist honors at Metros.”

Honorable Mention: Pieter DeGroot '19

• The Washington Post wrote: “In anchoring a defense that allowed just seven goals a game en route to the WCAC championship, the Princeton commit scooped 56 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers.”

• The Washington Post wrote: “A two-time captain and four-year varsity starter, the Ohio State signee and Under Armour all-American became D.C.’s all-time leader in points with 276 in his career, including 88 as a senior. He powered the Eagles to a third WCAC title in four years.”
