Rugby Wins MAVRC, Will Go for National Title

On Friday, May 11, Gonzaga's varsity purple rugby Eagles captured their 7th straight MAVRC Championship with a 26-19 victory over Good Counsel.

Coming out of halftime, the game was tied 12-12, but the Eagles got two second half tries to extend the lead and hold off the Falcons for the victory.  "Good Counsel is a very good team," Head Coach Peter Baggetta told Goff Rugby Report. "They are well-coached and well-prepared. They get wrestlers after the wrestling season and they've got one of the top wrestling programs in the region."

Now the team has reached the pinnacle of its season: the National Championship tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, which they entered as the top seed. Their quest to bring home the crown began with a quarterfinal win over Greenwich 36-17.  Next up is the the semifinal game on Friday, May 18.
