Rugby Beats Top Ranked St. Edwards, Prep Up Next

The varsity purple Eagles defeated the top-ranked team in the nation, St. Edward (OH) on Sunday, April 22.  Here are two excellent team tries from the match:

It was a tight, back and forth game, with Gonzaga scoring a try right at halftime to lead 22-8 at the intermission.  St. Edward made it 22-15 early in the second half, but the Eagles would put together two tries to lead 34-15. The team would give up one more try, but would hold on to win 30-20.

According to Goff Rugby Report, Will Lyke '18 was a force at No. 8 and center Alex Billups '19 continues to emerge as a dangerous player. "It was a good win for us," said Head Coach Peter Baggetta. "Our depth came through as we had five starters not playing due to injuries." Baggetta said his team is much improved after an early loss to St. Ignatius (who lost to St. Edward later on). The team's tour to Argentina forced the players to raise the pace of their game. "It's the story of our seasons - slow start and build. We have never had a season where we did not lose a game or two."

The Eagles defeated St. John's 66-3 on April 24.  Next up is a showdown with rival Georgetown Prep on Saturday, April 28 at 1 pm at Prep.
