News of Alumni: Ken Miles ’88 and Matt O’Donnell ’12

Ken Miles ’88 (l) and Matt O’Donnell ’12 recently met at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy where Ken was a featured speaker at “Eclipse 2018,” an annual celebration of diversity and inclusion hosted by the Academy. Matt, a First Class Cadet, hosted Ken’s visit.
 
Ken, the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Executive Director of the Cox Communication Academic Center for Student-Athletes at Louisiana State University, was invited to speak at the event by USCG Athletics Director Tim Fitzpatrick. In his address to more than 500 USCG Cadets, faculty, and staff, Ken talked about growing up and succeeding as an African American professional in modern America.
 
Matt is a 1/c, or First Class Cadet, who will graduate in May with a mechanical engineering degree. He was also a two-year starter on the USCG football team. Upon graduation in May, Matt will be commissioned as an Ensign and then report to his first assignment on Coast Guard Cutter Valiant in Florida.
 
“Ken was fabulous – got an ovation from the attendees,” said Fitzpatrick. Of Ken and Matt’s common Gonzaga background, he said, “It was a pleasure to hear them share Gonzaga lore and to watch them bond based on their common experiences. I was honored to be with them!”
