Students Participate in Model UN Conference

Last week, 27 Gonzaga students participated in the North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) conference at the Washington Hilton. One of the largest and oldest UN simulations for high school students in the world, the event was organized by Georgetown University and drew more than 3,000 students.

During the four-day event, Gonzaga students had the opportunity to debate with other high schoolers on issues of diplomacy, trade, and global policy. Gonzaga represented a diverse array of nations and people, including Bhutan, Panama, Syria, a US senator during the 1930s, and a Swedish knight in the 1600s.

Carl Cardozo, faculty moderator of the United Nations Club, says: "Year after year, our guys’ assessment is always the same: The rush, the excitement, the feel of participating in these conferences is unlike anything they have experienced. NAIMUN is as close as you can get to the feel of actually partaking in our nation’s diplomacy."
