Basketball Defeats St. John’s To Earn 5th Straight Win

Since falling to Paul VI on the road in their lone loss of the season on January 9, the varsity basketball Eagles have reeled off five straight victories to improve to 16-1 overall and 7-1 in WCAC play. The Eagles beat DeMatha on the road on January 11, Sacred Heart (CT) in the HoopHall Classic on January 13 in Springfield, MA, and McNamara and St. Mary’s Ryken last week.

On Sunday, January 21, Coach Turner’s No. 2 ranked team defeated arch rival St. John’s 55-50 in a home game that was originally scheduled for January 4 but was postponed due to snow. After leading by as many as nine in the second half, the game was tied with less than a minute remaining. Gonzaga captain Myles Dread ’18 passed to Chuck Harris ’20 who made a three-pointer  to break the tie and give the Eagles the lead for good. “You had the senior leader who could’ve called it for himself but instead just trusted in the underclassman that he was going to make the shot, and he did,” Turner said. “That’s something that’s going to bode well for us as a team going further down the line.”  Click here to read the full article from the Washington Post.
