Hockey Wins Decisive Victory Over St. Albans

In a much-anticipated matchup, the Varsity I Eagles defeated the St. Albans Bulldogs 8-2 on December 12 on home ice at Fort DuPont. After spotting the visitors two goals in the first period, Coach Slater’s team scored eight unanswered goals beginning just 38 seconds into the second period to cruise past the Bulldogs. The Eagles put 61 shots on goal in the game.

Cole Vallese ‘20 led the Eagles with two goals and two assists, while Jack Norton ‘21 added three points (2 goals, 1 assist).

Henry Middlebrook ‘18 started the onslaught for Gonzaga, with an assist from Farrell Dinn ‘20. Colin O’Leary ‘20 pulled the Eagles even at 4:11, followed by Vallese’s unassisted go-ahead goal at 6:30 of the second. Norton and Kurt Bruun assisted on O’Leary’s goal.  The Eagles were up 3-2 after two periods.

The third period turned into a shooting gallery for the home team, as Gonzaga scored five times on 27 shots on goal. Norton scored two of those goals, while Vallese picked up his second of the game and Dinn notched one of his own. Luca Docking ‘20 added a goal to the rout.

Jackson McDonnell and Evan Orloff scored for St. Albans. Gonzaga goalie Dominic Basse ‘18 made 15 saves on 17 shots.
 
The team is now 6-1-1 overall and will remain atop the Washington Post rankings.  The next game--the last contest before the Purple Puck--is against St. John’s at Rockville Ice Rink on Friday, December 22 at 5:30pm.
