Gonzaga Peace Club Holds Event to Foster Unity

Gonzaga's Peace Club recently hosted the kick-off event of the ComeUnity Coalition. In the wake of the Charlottesville incident, about 50 students and faculty from eight Catholic schools came together to discuss and foster unity. Students created banners about solidarity to hang in each school, elected officers to represent each school, and participated in a prayer witness for unity at the U.S. Capitol.

“Charlottesville was a dark moment in our history and we needed some light,” says club moderator and Religion teacher Mrs. Katie Murphy. “The kids who joined ComeUnity Coalition blasted the day with light. They put into action Dr. King's quote: ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.’ They give me great hope that a better day will dawn.”

The following Gonzaga students participated: Solu Obiorah ‘18, Ryan Vigilante ‘19, John Hilton ‘18, Jonathan Hurley ‘18, Mick Gormley ‘18, Dean Engram ‘19, Winston Leslie ‘18, Andrew Thomas ‘18, Jesse Dolojan ‘21, Matt Gannon ‘18, Kyle Brown ‘18, Aaron Douoguih ‘18, Michael Tobin ‘21, and Kevin McLaughlin ‘18; Jonathon Hurley ’18 will serve as Gonzaga’s representative on the Coalition.
