Football Beats McNamara, Prepares for St. John's

The varsity football Eagles defeated Bishop McNamara, 38-7 on Saturday, October 20. The win secures a playoff spot in the WCAC's Capital Division playoffs--the league moved to two tiers in 2018. The upper division is comprised of Gonzaga, DeMatha, Good Counsel, Bishop McNamara, and St. John's while the Metro Division includes Archbishop Carroll, Bishop Ireton, Bishop O'Connnell, Paul VI, and St. Mary's Ryken. Both championship games will be held on November 18 at University of Maryland Stadium. The regular season will wrap up vs St. John's on November 3 at 3 PM on Buchanan Field. The annual match-up will be held on Eye Street for the first time in decades.

In the win over Bishop McNamara, Gonzaga scored first on a 30 yard field goal from senior kicker Marko Kemp. After stopping the Mustangs, Caleb Williams '21 took a quarterback sneak into the endzone. McNamara got on the board early in the second quarter to make it 10-7. Seniors Loic Sangwa and John Marshall scored touchdowns before halftime to give the team a 24-7 lead at the break.

McNamara moved the ball in the second half, but could not find the endzone. Lucas Warfield '19 and Sangwa both scored rushing touchdowns while Josh Williams '21 and Joseph Weté '19 led the defense. Sam Sweeney '19 had three explosive plays on offense and played well on special teams.
