Soccer Starts Strong, Ready for Home Opener

After a one-hour lightning delay on Friday, August 31, the varsity soccer Eagles began their 2018 season on the road vs South River. Gonzaga came out strong as Will Thompson ‘21 scored two goals in the first half. Defensively, Christian Maalouf ’20 led the way. Captain Pierre De La Croix-Vauvois ‘19 owned the center midfield for the Eagles as they would go on to win 2-1 to earn the first win of the year.

The next day, the Eagles got another road win with a 1-0 victory over Severna Park. Ryan Elie ‘20 scored a beautifully placed 30 yard shot in the upper left corner in the run of play. The game-winning goal was assisted by Brady Young ‘20. Mark Western ‘20 played left back and marked Severna Park’s best player to help lead the strong Eagle defensive effort. Senior captain Gonzalo Bartolipinero ‘19 had a great night in the net making three key saves to earn the shutout and to improve the team’s record to 2-0.

Gonzaga is ranked #2 in the Washington Post preseason rankings. The home opener is Friday, September 7 at 7pm vs Penn Charter.
